How to deal with private and reserved IPs addresses

This page shows you how to deal with private and reserved IPs addresses.

Requirements

  • You have an account and are logged into cloud.scaleway.com
  • You have configured your SSH Key
  • You have a running server

Private IPs

When you create and start server, your server get a private IP address and a reserved public IP address by default. You have the choice to change the network configuration of a server and remove its reserved public IP.

This feature gives you a lot of control and you can put your servers into our private subnet and not expose them to the internet (e.g Databases, Backups). It allows you to optimize your costs and to fight the global IPv4 shortage.

You can release and associate IP addresses in the Control Panel.

In the Control Panel, click “Servers” in the left panel.

Servers list

Select the server you want to release or associate the public IP. In the server details, display advanced options.

Select if your server requires an IP or not. Then, you can see the change of your server’s IP addresses details.

Reserved IPs

A reserved IP address is an IP address which you hold independently of any server. You can attach it to any of your server and do live migration of the IP address between your servers.

Be aware that attaching a reserved IP address to a server will remove the previous public IP address of the server and cut any ongoing public connection to the server.

When you delete the reserved IP, it is disassociated from your account to be used by other users. You can reserve IP addresses in the Control Panel. You then have to configure which server gets which reserved IP.

Create and attach a reserved IP address

In the Control Panel, click “Network” in the compute section.

Click on “Create New Ip”
