Scaleway opens PAR2, its second innovative and sustainable availability zone (AZ) in Paris

After the recent announcement of its new Warsaw region, the responsible public cloud provider continues its development with a second availability zone (AZ) in Paris which is zero-carbon and designed for high energy and water efficiency.

Paris, 24 September 2020 – Scaleway, the fast-growing European Public Cloud provider, announces a second availability zone (AZ) in Paris (PAR2) offering unique features. This new AZ is hosted at DC5 in Paris, Scaleway’s most recent and innovative data center, the most sustainable in Europe. Scaleway, which fully designed, built and operates DC5 in Paris, is proud to be able to offer users a continuity of service and safety associated with unprecedented environmental performance. With its now six data centers in three regions (Paris, Amsterdam and Warsaw), Scaleway is consolidating its position as a major player in Europe’s public cloud.

A sovereign AZ, hyper-connected to the Paris region, to guarantee increased availability and meet resilience requirements
PAR2 allows companies to deploy their applications and infrastructures:
in a region designed for very high environmental performance
and across multiple availability zones (AZ) separated by over 10km within one region, thus ensuring better resilience for their applications
PAR2 also benefits from Scaleway’s 20 years of expertise in terms of data centers, with the latest generation of high availability, hyper-secure, ISO50001 certified infrastructure, meeting the requirements of HDS1 and 2 standards for hosting health data.

From the user interface and/or the API, users can easily choose the AZ best adapted to their needs and easily build high availability multi-data center environments and applications. Users can from now deploy Virtual Instances (GP1) or Bare Metal servers in PAR2 and use Object Storage services. All the standard services of Scaleway’s public cloud ecosystem, such as load balancers, managed databases, Block Storage and Kapsule Kubernetes, will also be available soon.

A sustainable, totally innovative and zero-carbon AZ
To limit the energy and water impact of its infrastructures while anticipating the exponential development of data storage and processing needs, Scaleway has developed and perfected unique technological innovations to achieve optimal energy and water performance. Not only is DC5 100% powered by renewable (hydraulic) energy, it also has an energy footprint 30-40% lower than that of a traditional data center, thanks to the fact that it does not require air conditioning.
Scaleway’s environmental awareness, and innovative offering provides a tangible response to the needs of companies who care about their environmental impact.
“Our natural air process and adiabatic cooling systems are the first of their kind in France. The servers are cooled by a simple air current connected to water evaporation. This adiabatic process allows for an extremely low PUE 1 of 1.15. DC5 consumes up to 40% less energy than most data centers and is powered exclusively by renewable energy. It is therefore a “zero carbon” infrastructure, which is far different from a “carbon neutral” strategy which can be achieved via a compensation policy. Our innovative approach allows us to combine technological and energy performance to meet the needs of companies that are increasingly concerned about their environmental footprint,” explains Arnaud de Bermigham, President of Scaleway.

Indeed, according to the World Economic Forum2, more and more companies now take environmental and energy criteria into account when they purchase infrastructure and equipment. An expectation that Scaleway wants to anticipate and exceed.
