Scaleway, part of the iliad Group, launches a new cloud region in Italy

Scaleway, the European public cloud and artificial intelligence platform of the iliad Group, arrives in Italy with a new cloud region in Milan and a presence on the local market. The announcement is part of a broader European growth strategy, where Scaleway already operates three cloud regions (France, Poland, and the Netherlands) that are wholly European-owned, with two more soon to be added in Sweden and Germany.
_“As a European hyperscaler, we are expanding our presence across Europe, and anchoring our ability to stay close to local markets. The launch of operations in Italy is a crucial step in this direction,”said Damien Lucas, CEO of Scaleway “Europe cannot rely entirely on foreign hyperscalers to fuel its digital economy. European companies must have access to hyperscale cloud platforms built in Europe, managed in accordance with EU regulations, and aligned with European priorities.”
Entry into the Italian Market
The Milan region will include three availability zones, the standard architecture used by Scaleway to ensure high availability and native redundancy for mission-critical workloads. The first availability zone, built in a data center in Settimo Milanese, is already operational. The other two, located in different data centers, will be completed in the coming months, and will be located in Basiglio and Milan.
In anticipation of the launch of the Italian cloud region, Scaleway recently opened a branch office in Milan to ensure long-term growth and strengthen technical expertise and sales at the local level.
In terms of partnerships, Scaleway is working to establish regional partnerships and strengthen its presence in the Italian ecosystem. Furthermore, the company is actively pursuing ACN (National Cybersecurity Agency) level 1 certification as a cloud service provider – a requirement for public sector projects.
The company’s offering is tailored to the needs of organizations of all sizes, from startups to large corporations, with scalability and competitiveness advantages over the hyperscalers currently in the market. The new region brings the cloud platform closer to local businesses, startups, business partners and institutions, improving the performance and resilience of organizations developing cloud-native and AI-based services.
A European hyperscaler
Scaleway aims to create a European hyperscaler by combining a large-scale platform with a strong presence in the European regional ecosystems. The company is currently an European market leader in public cloud services. It is 100% European-owned, ensuring that the company is fully immune from any non-EU interference, while also guaranteeing that data localization is all based within Europe.
Operating solely under European jurisdiction, the platform offers businesses and public institutions a reliable cloud environment designed to support mission-critical workloads across all sectors. Moreover, Scaleway relies on European talents, since 100% of the teams are based in Europe including R&D functions, and 90% of Infrastructure providers are European vendors.
At the forefront of AI innovation and development
Artificial intelligence is driving demand for computing power and specialized platforms. As part of the €3 billion investment program in cloud & AI announced by the iliad Group, Scaleway is accelerating the development of its European public cloud platform, integrating a complete cloud ecosystem with advanced capabilities for artificial intelligence.
Through this cloud platform, the company offers the largest European-owned AI computing power, enabling organizations of all sizes to train and deploy AI models at scale. In addition to infrastructure, Scaleway enables developers and businesses to quickly access leading AI models. It also works closely with various partners in the AI ecosystem, including Mistral AI and Hugging Face, allowing organizations to experiment with and deploy the best open-source and cutting-edge models as soon as they become available.
Open and Independent Technology
In addition to performance and innovation, Scaleway’s cloud platform stands out for its open approach and strong commitment to technological independence.
Unlike other cloud platforms built around proprietary ecosystems, Scaleway designs and manages its own cloud technology stack using open-source technologies and open standards. This approach allows organizations to build and run their own applications without being locked into closed platforms or proprietary tools.
By maintaining control over its core technologies, Scaleway ensures transparency, interoperability, and long-term flexibility. Organizations can deploy workloads using open APIs and widely adopted technologies, thereby facilitating the adoption of hybrid and multi-cloud strategies while maintaining full portability of their applications.
