1815 is a Dutch development agency based in The Hague. We design, build and run high-traffic digital platforms for media companies and publishers in the Netherlands and Belgium, and for Dutch municipalities and semi-public organisations. Our guiding principle is in our Dutch tagline, “Gemaakt om te blijven”: made to stay. We build platforms that keep performing for years, and we remain responsible for them long after launch.
Our media clients are well-known brands with large audiences, sharp traffic peaks and a real attack surface. That shapes how we work. Performance and caching are designed in at every layer, and security is part of the architecture from day one rather than an afterthought. For public sector clients we build on open standards and NL Design System, and we are one of the suppliers within Open Webconcept, the Dutch collaboration of governments and suppliers around open-source web platforms. Quality and information security are managed through an integrated management system based on ISO 9001 and ISO 27001. We combine WordPress and Symfony, giving editorial teams a familiar workflow on top of a robust, well-engineered application layer.
We cover the full lifecycle: architecture, development, hosting, maintenance and ongoing support. Client platforms run on Scaleway, on Kubernetes clusters and serverless, complemented by other Scaleway services where the platform calls for them. For Dutch municipalities, we offer Haven-compliant hosting on Scaleway. Haven is the standard set by the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG) for platform-independent, Kubernetes-based cloud hosting, part of the Common Ground programme. Choosing European infrastructure is a deliberate decision: wherever possible, we favour European, open-source and self-hosted solutions, for our clients and for ourselves. We also give back to the open-source ecosystem in several ways, from releasing our own packages to contributing to shared initiatives.
