Scaleway, Iliad's BtoB cloud, launches new generation of bare metal servers

October 03, 2019

Paris, October 3, 2019 – Recognized as a world bare metal market leader (1), Scaleway is reinventing the pay-as-you-go dedicated server, with a choice of high-performance, high-end machines that meet businesses’ evolving needs.

Scaleway’s new Bare Metal Dedibox range offers servers with 100% dedicated hardware and billed by the hour.

Users have come to expect a pay-per-use cloud consumption model for digital resources, including for dedicated servers which have traditionally laid the foundation of IT infrastructures. Scaleway anticipated this trend as early as 2013 with its very first ARM-based Bare Metal Instances. Combining the advantages of dedicated servers with the flexibility of the cloud, this type of offer has since become a market standard.

Today Scaleway is going a step further with its Bare Metal as a Service (BMaaS) offers. Designed for high performance and simplified infrastructure management, the range is based on Scaleway’s 14 years of experience with its highly reliable Dedibox dedicated servers. Hourly pricing makes it possible to test before going into production and to occasionally increase the workload (peak load). Bare Metal Dedibox servers are managed via APIs and CLIs, and, in the coming weeks, via infrastructure as code (IaC) tools like Terraform and Ansible. The servers are also compatible with the entire Scaleway Elements public cloud ecosystem.

“Bare Metal Dedibox is an ideal transition from the traditional model to the cloud. Users benefit from greater flexibility and a better experience, without sacrificing performance or control over the machine. Our new bare metal servers offer CPU and disk performance 3 to 10 times higher than previous Bare Metal Instances to meet new usage demands,” said Pierre-Yves Dubreucq, VP Bare Metal at Scaleway.

Six machine models are available to get started, from the GP series to meet production requirements, to the High CPU and High Memory series for more specific uses. The range will be regularly updated with a wide variety of machines.

In addition to the well-known advantages of dedicated servers (no sharing resources, strong performance without a hypervisor layer and freedom of configuration), the Bare Metal Dedibox servers incorporate specific features much appreciated by users:
• DDoS protection included
• Soft RAID
• A choice between the distributions Ubuntu, Debian and CentOS, which represent 90% of client uses
• KVM access, which allows remote administrator access and rescue mode.

Other options will be rolled out in the coming weeks and months, such as failover IP, reverse DNS, VPC network, backup and monitoring. Currently available in Scaleway’s DC5 datacenter in Paris, the Bare Metal Dedibox servers will also be deployed in Amsterdam.
